Gillian Anderson (birthname is Gillian Leigh Anderson) was born on August 9th 1969 in Chicago, Illinois in the U.S.. She is the eldest of three children, her father Edward runs a film post-production company and her mother Rosemary is a computer analyst. After Gillian was born the family moved to Puerto Rico and then to London, returning to America when Gillian was eleven. When she was younger Gillian was quite the rebel. She died her hair purple and went out with a twenty-year old musician when she was in her mid teens.
The family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where she graduated from City High School in Grand Rapids. She first discovered her love of theatre while taking part in community theatre productions while still in High School. Gillian attended DePaul University's Goodman Theatre School in Chicago, from which she received her BFA Degree. She moved to New York when she was twenty-two to pursue a career in acting.
Gillian studied with the National Theatre of Great Britain at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, U.S. she then went to DePaul University. Before she worked on 'The X Files' Gillian did a lot of theatre work and won critical acclaim for her work in these plays. She won a 1990-91 Theatre World Award for he role in the play 'Absent Friends' produced by Alan Ayckbourne which ran at the Manhattan Theatre Club. She started her career in 'The Philanthropist' at the Long Wharf Theatre. To support herself when she started out she worked as a waitress. When she was younger Gillian was quite the rebel. She died her hair purple and went out with a twenty-year old musician when she was in her mid teens.

In 1993 she auditioned for The X-Files Pilot. She got the part assuming it would run for thirteen episodes, this is the number of episodes that networks ask for to begin with. Little did she know that seven years later the show would still be running, with a feature film under their belt too. During her time on 'The X Files' Gillian won several awards for her portrayal of Agent Scully. These include an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe and two SAG awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series.
Since 'The X Files' ended Gillian has done some film work, including starring in the film 'House of Mirth', which she won critical acclaim for her lead role as Lily Bart, a beautiful socialite in New York at the turn of the century who realises her exceptional beauty attracts unwelcome attention and she risks losing her true love in the search for a wealthy husband. Her other film credits include 'The X Files' film, Fight the Future, 'Playing By Heart', where she plays Meredith in a comedy about love and relationships set in L.A., 'Hellcab', where she plays Brenda in a film about 14 hours in the life of a Chicago cab driver. She also took part in Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues.
Gillian recently starred in the BBC drama Bleak House in which she plays Lady Dedlock. She also starred in the Irish film The Mighty Celt and The Last King of Scotland, the story of the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.
Shortly after she began working on The X-Files, Gillian began seeing Clyde Klotz, who was a art director on The X-Files. They got married in 1994 after dating for four months. Soon after Gillian found out she was pregnant. She feared the part would be recast but when she disclosed to Chris Carter that she was pregnant, the decision was made to film around her pregnancy. This led to the abduction of Dana Scully storyline. Her daughter Piper was born in September 1994. She was delivered by caesarean section. She and Klotz were divorced three years later in 1997.
Gillian got married again in 2004 but is now separated from her husband Julian Ozanne. She had a second child, a son, Oscar in 2006 and now lives in London with Oscar's father Mark Griffiths. She moved back to London in 2002.
